At the recent RAID conference in Brussels, industry leaders and policymakers gathered to discuss how regulation can harness the potential of technology, AI, the internet, and data to drive European competitiveness.

Jonny Shipp, Senior Leader, Digital Policy Europe at The Internet Commission, was a key participant in RAID 2024's panel discussion on "Challenges of Misinformation in the Digital Age." The panel, which also featured experts from Bournemouth University, the Chartered Trading Standards Institute, and the U.S. Department of Justice, addressed the growing impact of mis- and dis-information across digital platforms and its implications for society, governance, and technology.

Misinformation and disinformation, while both forms of false or inaccurate information, differ in their intent. Misinformation is often unintentional, resulting from errors, misunderstandings, or a lack of knowledge. Disinformation, on the other hand, is intentionally spread to deceive or manipulate others.

The panel emphasised the need for coordinated action to address misinformation. They highlighted the role of technology in detecting and combating misinformation but cautioned against relying solely on automated solutions. The UN's recent adoption of the Global Digital Compact offers a promising framework for international cooperation in this area.

In conclusion, the discussion on misinformation and digital regulation highlights the urgent need for co-ordinated action to address this issue. By nurturing collaboration among governments, technology companies, and civil society organisations, we can drive effective solutions such as developing shared standards, accountability frameworks, and reporting mechanisms to combat misinformation and protect integrity, making The Internet Commission's mission to create a safer and fairer internet more relevant than ever in today's digital age.
